Profile of the 8th Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly

Results of the election to the 8th Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly were declared on June 2, 2024.  The Assembly has 60 seats.  This note compares the profiles of the incoming Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) with that of the previous term of the Assembly.

  • BJP won five more seats as compared to 2019, bagging a majority with 46 seats.  In 10 constituencies, the BJP candidates won uncontested.  
  • Janata Dal (United), which had seven MLAs in 2019, did not contest any seat in 2024.

Four women elected, highest ever in the Assembly

Note: *Initially, the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly had 33 seats (30 elected and 3 nominated) when it was a Union Territory. After becoming a state in 1987, the Assembly was expanded to 60 elected seats.

Note: 2024 education data covers 59 candidates as information for one candidate is not available in the affidavit. 

  • Four women have been elected to the Assembly in 2024.  This is the highest ever, and one more than 2019.
  • Two-thirds of the candidates elected to the Assembly in 2024 have at least an undergraduate degree.  This proportion has increased as compared to 2019.

  • The Arunachal Pradesh Assembly has gotten older over the last four terms.  In 2009, the average age of MLAs was 46 years, which has increased to 53 in 2024.  
  • In 2009, eight elected candidates were less than 40 years old.  In 2024, none of the elected candidates is younger than 40.
