Profile of the 3rd Telangana Legislative Assembly

Results of the election to the 3rd Telangana Legislative Assembly were declared on December 3, 2023.  The Telangana Assembly has 119 seats.  This note compares the profiles of the incoming elected Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) with that of the previous term of the Assembly.

Marginal increase in proportion of women; fewer MLAs with graduate degrees

  • In 2023, 8% elected MLAs are women, higher than the proportion in 2018 (5%). 
  • 72 MLAs elected in 2023 have at least a graduate degree.  This is 15% lower than the number in 2018 (85).

60% of newly elected MLAs are older than 55 years

  • The average age of the newly elected MLAs is 56.  The proportion of MLAs above 55 years increased from 39% in 2018 to 60% in 2023.   

  • In this Assembly, the average age of women MLAs is 48, compared to 57 for men.
